Background of the Study
Religious institutions have long played influential roles in shaping political decision-making processes in many societies. In Ilesa East Local Government Area of Osun State, religious organizations serve not only as spiritual centers but also as key stakeholders in local governance. These institutions often provide moral guidance and mobilize communities during election periods and policy debates (Ade, 2023). Their involvement in political processes can enhance community cohesion and foster ethical leadership; however, it may also lead to biases and conflicts when religious interests clash with secular policy objectives (Okafor, 2024). Recent research has highlighted both the positive and negative impacts of religious influence on political decisions, emphasizing the need for balanced engagement (Chukwu, 2025). This study examines how religious institutions affect political decision-making in Ilesa East by analyzing their role in policy formulation, community mobilization, and the ethical considerations that underpin local governance. The research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the intersection between religion and politics at the local level, contributing to broader discussions on governance and social cohesion.

Statement of the Problem
In Ilesa East, the involvement of religious institutions in political decision-making has raised concerns regarding the balance between spiritual influence and secular governance. While these institutions can promote community unity, their active role may also lead to partiality in policy formulation and implementation. This duality creates challenges in ensuring that political decisions are made impartially and in the best interest of the entire community. The study seeks to critically evaluate the impact of religious influence on local governance and to identify measures to maintain a fair political process (Ade, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the extent of religious institutions’ influence on political decision-making in Ilesa East.

  • To identify both positive and negative outcomes of religious involvement in governance.

  • To recommend measures for balancing religious influence with secular governance principles.

Research Questions:

  • How do religious institutions shape political decision-making in Ilesa East?

  • What are the benefits and drawbacks of religious involvement in local governance?

  • What strategies can ensure balanced and impartial policy decisions?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Religious institutions significantly influence political decisions in Ilesa East.

  • H2: The influence of religious bodies creates both unity and bias in policy formulation.

  • H3: Regulatory frameworks can mitigate undue religious influence on political processes.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the dual role of religious institutions in political decision-making in Ilesa East. The findings will inform policies that seek to balance spiritual guidance with objective governance. By providing insights into the interplay between religion and politics, the research contributes to enhancing democratic practices and social cohesion (Ade, 2023; Chukwu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating the influence of religious institutions on political decision-making in Ilesa East Local Government Area, focusing on their roles in policy formation and community mobilization.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Religious Institutions: Organizations or bodies that promote religious activities and moral guidance.

  • Political Decision-Making: The process of formulating and implementing policies by governmental authorities.

  • Secular Governance: A system of administration that is independent of religious influence.
